Songs From The Book Review
Based on scripture, Songs from the Book accompanies the massive millennial outreach campaign and 1999 version of The Book, an accessible and easy to read Bible. While exclusive to truly alternative sounds, Songs embraces some of the finest music of the genre and includes some of its most beloved artists. Building on contemporary Christian music's solid foundation and in the spirit of passing the torch, Michael Card's Celtic-pop tune "The Book" (in the vein of his underappreciated Starkindler) opens the recording; he is followed by descendants of contemporary gospel's first family, Winans Phase II, who modernly reconstruct the Card-penned "El Shaddai." Amy Grant, who had a huge breakthrough hit with the aforementioned, lends her considerable presence to the younger Winans's rendition and follows with the late Rich Mullins's "Nothing Is Beyond You" from the Jesus Record. Succeeding standout offerings include songs by Jaci Velasquez, Anointed, Bryan Duncan, and Crystal Lewis, and Mullins's Ragamuffin Band closes the lovely collection with the string-propelled "My Deliverer," coming full circle with Celtic instrumentation. --Paige La Grone Read more...
